The Impossible Elephant, designed by cognitive scientist Roger Shepard, is an impossible object that exploits the brain's parsing of positive vs negative space. In normal object recognition, the visual system classifies shapes as either "figures" (solid objects containing features) or "grounds" (empty space between features). Contours define the boundary between figure and ground.
In this drawing, the contour lines are drawn in an alternating, contradictory fashion. The top half of the legs are drawn normally: four solid columns extending down from the body. However, the bottom half (the hooves) are offset. The hooves are drawn at the locations corresponding to the *empty spaces* between the top columns.
As your eyes scan down from the body, your primary visual cortex (V1) tracks four solid legs. But as your focus shifts to the feet at the bottom, the brain is forced to treat the empty space between the legs as a solid object (since it terminates in a foot). This causes a figure-ground swap: what was "empty ground" at the top becomes "solid figure" at the bottom.
This conflict triggers cognitive dissonance in the parietal lobe, which attempts to build a coherent 3D coordinate model of the animal. Because local regions make sense individually, but the global layout is mathematically impossible, the brain gets trapped in a perceptual loop. This highlights that our visual perception is not a passive mirror of physical reality, but a top-down geometric reconstruction that can be hijacked by inconsistent boundary lines.
Try covering the bottom half of the elephant's legs. Notice how it looks completely normal. Now uncover the bottom and cover the top half. Again, it looks normal. The paradox only appears when you view the whole figure.
