๐ง THE SCIENCE
The Penguin or Cat optical illusion is a modern silhouette-based ambiguous figure. Like other bistable figures, it contains structural configurations that support two distinct object categories. A single geometric area functions both as the white belly of a waddling penguin and the face-marking of a domestic cat.
When your eyes look at this shape, the retinal ganglion cells capture the luminance difference between the dark background, the slate-blue outline, and the white center. This raw information is sent through the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) to area V1. Here, local features like the sharp angles at the top (which can be interpreted as cat ears or penguin flipper ends) are mapped out.
However, the final perception is resolved in the ventral stream of the visual pathway, which flows into the inferior temporal cortex. This region deals with object representation. Because the visual system cannot assign multiple identities to the same region simultaneously (known as the figure-ground assignment limit), it selects one category to occupy the "figure" state, relegating the rest to the "ground."
This visual competition is highly dynamic. Once the brain constructs the "cat" hypothesis, the neurons representing the cat are highly active. Over time, these active neurons undergo adaptation (fatigue), reducing their firing rates. As their activity drops, the lateral inhibition they exert on the competing "penguin" neurons weakens. Eventually, the penguin interpretation crosses the activation threshold, and your conscious awareness flips.
