Watch the red dot climb the steps continuously in a clockwise direction:

  • Notice that each step the dot takes appears to be an upward step.
  • Track the dot for multiple loops. It makes four 90-degree turns and completes a full loop, yet returns to the exact same starting position.

🧠 THE SCIENCE

The Penrose Stairs represents a geometric impossibility depicted in a two-dimensional drawing. This drawing plays with the rules of linear perspective. The visual system processes the staircase locally (each individual step and flight looks perfectly natural, containing correct depth lines and 90-degree angles). Because our brains assume consistency, we extrapolate a three-dimensional shape where the stairs connect globally in a continuous, perpetual loop.

However, in three-dimensional space, a staircase cannot form a closed loop where every flight ascends. This illusion exploits the fact that our visual system has no built-in "global consistency checker" for perspective. The parietal lobe builds a mental 3D construct based on local cues. Because local cues are consistent, the brain is forced to accept the impossible global configuration, resulting in a fascinating contradiction of standard spatial logic.
