Observe how figure-ground boundaries swap dynamically:

  • Observe the yellow buttons/necklace. Does interpreting them as keys vs jewelry trigger a perceptual swap?
  • Stare at the central black outline. When you categorize the left white region as 'the object', the saxophonist emerges. When you categorize the right dark region as 'the object', the woman's face emerges.
  • Notice how the eye shape (white circle) changes function: it is the musician's closed eye or a highlight on the woman's cheek.

๐Ÿง  THE SCIENCE

The Saxophonist or Woman's Face optical illusion is a masterclass in figure-ground organization and bistable boundary assignment. Originally conceived as a graphic design challenge, it provides key insights into how the human brain processes edge information and segregates objects from their background context.

When visual signals enter the primary visual cortex (V1), neurons extract the locations and orientations of edges. Here, the central edge is identified as a continuous, organic curved line. However, an edge by itself is ambiguous: it represents the boundary between two adjacent regions. To recognize what the regions represent, the visual system must assign ownership of the edge to one side or the other.

This process of edge assignment occurs in higher visual areas, specifically area V2 and the ventral object pathway (LOC). If the brain assigns edge ownership to the left side, the left white region becomes the "figure," showing a waddled, shaded profile of a saxophone player. The right side is perceived as empty "ground" (the background shadow).

Conversely, if the brain assigns edge ownership to the right side, the dark-blue region becomes the "figure," outlining a woman's face looking left. The left region is now relegated to background space. Because a single boundary can only be assigned to one figure at any given moment, the brain cannot perceive both interpretations simultaneously. Instead, your consciousness cycles between the two hypotheses, illustrating that what we "see" is a top-down model constructed by the brain, not a simple copy of the external world.
